stand up and say something about birds
October 14th 2006 23:57
Before I spilled a cup of tea on my Visual Arts Program for the Melbourne International Arts Festival and glued all the pages together, I noticed that the theme for this year is the relationship between humans and animals.
Coincidently, I had an unexpected relationship with a bird during the week. It was a baby bird too soon out of its nest and it was peeping helplessly by a car. I covered its eyes over with my wrap and it clutched its little claw around my finger and was beautiful. I nearly took it home but the vet was still open so I took it there. I thought I had rescued a native bird but the vet nurse said I’d saved a Noisy Mynah bird (they are the best kind).
It started a hell of a din when it wasn’t in my hand, then it flew into my hair. It was almost as if that bird really liked me.
It’s a cruel and twisted world, but there are still birds in it that like me.
When I get a new copy of the Arts Program, I will be able to have more experiences with art and animals. The festival has made me want to stand up and say something about birds; I like birds and birds like me.

I enjoyed this post and just wanted to let you know.
I have just finished a book about Augury, which explores a long history of mankinds relationship with birds, including indiividual divination through calls, flight and species. I've put a summary on my secondary blog 'An Ordinary Life' which runs off Envirowarrior and I hope you get the chance to read and enjoy it. Please feel free to leave a comment and critique. Feedback is important to writers of all kinds.
Thanks for sharing this story, I hope it comes to Brisbane?
Lilla.

I did check out your blog, it's full of interesting and intelligent stuff. What an inspiring subject Augury is. There must be a great many spiritual relationships humans share with animals of all kinds.
I'm not sure if the festival comes to Brisbane, I will have to find out.
Good luck with publishing your book!

I just dropped by again to read your new post, but see you've been busy.
The other reason was to ask how the show was, did you enjoy it?

As far as I can tell, the festival is not going to Queensland, but most states have an International Arts Festival, so perhaps there is something similar.
I saw 'The Idea of the Animal' which is an exhibition as part of the festival and I did enjoy it. If you get a chance, check out David Noonan's work which is about owls. He has some work in the exhibition, a video obervation but he also uses the motif of the owl in a lot of other medias.
Thanks again for dropping by.
