Paint Story
September 26th 2006 10:55
When I was visiting my brother and looking at his War Hammer models, he told me that the models that mean the most to him are the ones that tell a story. By ‘story’ he meant that the models had to be posed mid snarl or about to tonk another model over the head. For him it is all about the gesture.
I was amazed by the honesty of the paints that he uses, ‘snot green’, ‘gore red’ and ‘elf flesh’ are just a few of the paint names which capture precisely what their intention is. Artist’s paints tend to have a sense of tradition in their names such as, Prussian blue and Cadmium yellow. While they are used by artist’s to express extraordinary gestures, their names are boring.
In contrast is, the names of house paints. Just a quick grab of sample names appears to tell an amazing story of epic proportions. Or a least the plot of a soap opera:
Falling star
Uplifting
Screenplay
Naughty neutral
Deep pleasure
Poet’s bloom
Party dress
Fortune Teller
City bistro
Backyard BBQ
Smarty pants
Widow’s walk
Just what is the story with the names of paint? Who gets to name them? I think it’s a job I would like to have.
