Manga Mania

People are asking about manga; is it art? The Japanese movement which incorporates comics and animation probably began with Katsushika Hokusai the renowned woodblock print maker who created images of funky figures in movement. Best known in the West is Osamu Tezuka’s manga such as Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. Hmm…innovative interpretive drawings developing out of an artistic tradition, sounds like art to me.
I have only seen the National Gallery of Victoria’s exhibition, Tezuka: the Marvel of Manga very briefly and I know I want to see more. While I was at the opening someone offered me a shot glass full of peas in a pod, I’m struggling to figure out what that is all about, just as others are scratching their heads about the whole comic art/popular culture question. The exhibition is small and rather expensive to enter, but the huge eyes of the comic book characters are enchanting. The exhibition is really just the beginning to the marvel of manga.
